4 2 WATCH – Sneak peek at 4 up and coming artists! – Sunny Ozell/Clean Cut Kid/Hannah Boleyn/Cimorelli
SUNNY OZELL –
Sunny Ozell is a singer-songwriter from Reno, Nevada in the United States. To get it out of the way, yes she is married to one of my favourite actors and people, Sir Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard, Professor X). I could listen to Mr Stewart talking about anything and like him, Sunny has a stunning voice that draws you in on first listen, makes you want to hear more.
An established vocalist and musician (playing violin from age 4, took vocal training at age 11 and joined the Reno Opera Company at age 12 as the only child member!). During her student years at university she majored in English Literature while playing with Blues bands and Soul-Funk bands through these education years. After graduating New York saw her regularly playing gigs performing her own takes on classics from Country, Blues and Soul artists mixing with original material. From an early age she knew music was her path, regularly listening to Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin and The Moody Blues from her dad’s vinyl collection.
Sunny has made records and toured with Chupacabra, an Afro-Cuban-Latin-Jazz ten piece band but healbum released in 2015 , “Take It With Me” is considered to be her solo “debut”. She describes her music as a “mix of soul, blues, country, Americana, and pop”. I first heard this lady on the trak “Git Gone”, a foot tapping Blues/Country stomper. The album was apparently recorded live in just 4 days, on it she puts soulful twists on songs by Tom Waits, Randy Newman and Roy Orbison!
I especially like the reworking of “No One Is To Blame” by 80s star Howard Jones, a gorgeous Jazzy feel and lush vocals make this a very nice cover version. The beautiful rendition of Randy Newman’s “Louisiana” is also a stand out track on the album. Let’s hope we hear more from this lady, she has a fabulous voice and talent.

CLEAN CUT KID –
Clean Cut Kid are a quartet from Liverpool consisting of husband and wife duo Mike and Evelyn Halls, Saul Godman and Ross Higginson. I’ve seen the music described as “soulful pop ballads washed in Mersey water”. I’m not sure if this was the band’s own description but it is very apt. The band have their own record label called Babe Magnet Records (via Polydor) and have released two singles, breaking out in 2015.
A debut album is scheduled to arrive this year and, although I have heard only the 4 songs from the two singles, they are heading the right way to be massive. “Vitamin C” , the debut song is an atmospheric, raw track with elements of Electronic and Pop Punk with a catchy little chorus like an old 70s Folk hippie anthem. The B-side “20 Years From Now” is a hybrid of 80s Pop Rock with a hint of Liverpool bands Cast and Echo And The Bunnymen. Hard to pin a genre on this band which is always a good thing!
The second single lead track, “Runaway” is laden with harmonies and U2-like Rock guitars complete with chants and catchy lyrics while the companion track “Jean” reminds me of Fleetwood Mac or Supertramp, a light Pop Rock track. The new single “Pick Me Up” is a brilliant rip-roaring catchy foot tapper which gives a good feeling of what the band are all about.
The group seem a bit wacky on the whole, and the music is experimental and unusual. There are catchy hooks and melodies within the songs that will reach inside your brain and hang a while. Look forward to the debut album this year!

HANNAH BOLEYN –
Hannah Boleyn hails from Leicester, England and according to her Facebook page, she calls her music “Cinematic Soul”. Hannah is sassy, soulful and has gigged with such artists as Joan Armatrading, James Morrison and Alexander O’Neal!. In 2013, she had only one song she thought was ready for release, that song, “When You’re Gone” was heralded by Radio 2 presenters Graham Norton and the late, great Terry Wogan and she had no label or backing band!
Hannah went to Performing Arts School at age 16 and realised her voice was a little different to the other girls there, that it wasn’t suited to Theatre styles. On choosing the name “Boleyn” she liked the idea of strong women who only want the best, just like Anne Boleyn who refused to be King Henry’s mistress and wanted to be Queen! Hannah wants to set herself high goals and reach them, with that attitude and determination she can go far!
She is influenced by the likes of Lana Del Ray and I can also sense a little Paloma Faith and Imelda May in there too, big, strong, powerful voices with bucketloads of emotion. “When You’re Gone” was a brilliant debut and it’s understandable why it was lauded by Radio 2, it shows the superb vocal talent that is sure going to make her a star.
Hannah has released a debut album, “The Boleyn Affair” with the aforementioned debut single, “When You’re Gone” and the uptempo 80s-esque Olivia Newton-John tinted “Tough Love” and some lovely ballads such as “Insignificant” and “So Ok”. There are Norah Jones moments, and Hannah even plays a Jazz chanteuse on “No Hard Feelings”. This lady is sure to go on to bigger things.

Cimorelli are a six piece girl band from Sacramento, California consisting of five sisters Christina, Katherine, Lisa, Amy, Lauren and Dani Cimorelli. They rose to fame in 2007 when their videos of themselves performing chart hits and covers were posted on YouTube gaining fans with their renditions in a cappella style with occasional instruments. This prompted a 2008 self-titled debut E.P. of their first original songs.
The girls have since released 5 E.P’s as of 2014 and a Christmas E.P. and hope to release their debut album in 2016. All the girls are performers, among the family sextet are occasional piano, drum, bass, guitar and tambourine players. As if that wasn’t enough, the talented sisters also oversee choreography, video editing, harmony and vocal arrangements!
I saw the taster video for the new album, “Up At Night” called “Heart’s On Fire”. A really great song, reminding of the 80s trio Wilson Phillips, gorgeous harmonies and very emotive vocals. The stunning “You’re Worth It” from the “Renegade” E.P. is also a favourite of mine. There hasn’t been a band like this for a long time, this is how girl bands should be. There’s so many Pop girl bands around now but these girls can turn their hands to any style and could have a major impact in years to come on the music scene.
They seem like ordinary sisters and have a variety of interests and hobbies! Bananas obsession, sunset bike rides, hot tea in beautiful and giant mugs, baking, psychology, theology, makeup, nail art, talking, pineapples, superheroes, video games and dance! Oh and of course, they love their music! Looks like we will be hearing more from this talented family..
