4 2 WATCH – Sneak peek at 4 up and coming artists! -Abigail Blake/Joseph & Maia/JOANovARC/Blair Dunlop
ABIGAIL BLAKE –
Abigail Blake is an unusual artist born in Coventry, moving to Kent and is now currently in Norwich, England. The unusual bit is that she plays the harp, piano, guitar, sings and writes her own songs, and despite bouts of early reading disorders she also studied piano and music production. The combination of these skills brings to the fore a very unique sound.
Creating elecronic samples and loops on her laptop to cue in live performances while playing the harp (run through a loop pedal and multi FX pedal) and singing brings an altogether different type of music that merges the genres of Electronica and Classical. Abigail has christened this proces “Twinklestep”. A very intelligent lady, she has created her own sound and produces and controls her live performances. This was much to her amusement when bemused sexist males in the industry just didn’t get it and were stuck in the dark ages it seems!
Releasing two E.P.’s is sure to get her noticed and lets hope the debut album arrives soon. Check out the “Etch” and “Birdcage” E.P.’s for some unique and creative tracks. The first set has the beautiful, haunting “Epiphany” while the second includes the pop classical ballad “Liar” with gorgeous vocals.
Abigail’s new single “Party Tricks” will be released in November, a song all about having the “trick” of being somebody who stands out in a crowd by being themselves instead of following an alcohol trend like sheep. Proving that this lady can chalenge society’s problems as well as giving us some really nice tunes!

JOSEPH & MAIA –
Joseph & Maia hail from New Zealand and after releasing their first E.P. entitled “Roll Up Your Sleeves” they split from Sony NZ, their then record label and went independent to release their crowd-funded debut album “Sorrento” in 2015. They are an Alternative Country/Pop act and consist of Joseph Thompson and Maia Potier.
They plan a follow up to “Sorrento” in 2017 and for the last couple of years they have toured constantly far and wide and included the U.K. and Europe. They do cite as one of their influences as Fleetwood Mac, but I hear some gorgeous harmonies there which remind me of the brilliant duos Simon & Garfunkel and The Everly Brothers. They bring a raw, live sound to the songs which gives off the emotion and energy in all the songs to a high level.
On the album “Somebody New” is pure Country while “I Know” is verging on Country Rock. The pure atmospheric sound is an absolute joy to listen to. You can almost feel like you’re watching the two of them live.
Legend has it that the duo just left NZ for further shores with one way tickets, no assistance, no contacts and not really a plan of action and they haven’t stopped! Busking around Europe gaining momentum and fanbase and turning heads in the industry. Big things are afoot for Joseph & Maia!

Sam Walker (vocals/bass/rhythm guitar), Shelley Walker (lead guitar/backing vocals), Laura Ozholl (vocals/guitar/bass) and Debbie Wildish (drums) are JOANovARC, the exciting new girl Rock band from London, U.K. Blasting onto the music scene with their first two singles “Live Rock n Roll” and “White Trash” they have been blaxing a trail around the globe with some electric live performances, supporting the likes of Slade, Adam Ant, Girlschool, Bonnie Tyler, Toto and Marillion!
Gil Norton, Grammy award winning producer of Foo Fighters will also take the reign for the girls’ debut album “Ride Of Your Life”. They have been named the new Queens of Rock, an esteemed title and judging by the band’s rapid rise and the industry’s praises, notably coming from Alice Cooper from Planet Rock Radio. They have the looks and the hooks, the typical Rock riffs, throw in some powerful vocals, great musicianship and catchy melodies this is an act to better the girl Rock bands of the past by some way!
JOANovARC are also the first female band to appear in the XBOX game “Rockband” and even featured in a Chinese movie blockbuster called “Triumph In The Skies”! Melodic Rock at its best and I am sure these girls will go from strength to strength and be a force to be reckoned with by the currently male dominated Rock arena. The girls are back with a bang!
The band have a lot of Rock influences, Joan Jett, Foo Fighters, Aerosmith, AC/DC and more, listening to the album I hear these influences but a lot more. of the singles “White Trash” reminds me of the pre-Pop/Rock of Heart while “Live Rock N Roll” surely has some Iron Maiden influence. The lead vocal is pretty much like a Rock Olivia Newton-John (“Five Years” and “Running Away” while thete are some elements of The Bangles too especially on the song “Dragon In The Sky”. Love this band and I think there’s a lot more to come as they evolve!

BLAIR DUNLOP –
Blair is a British singer-songwriter who has released 3 albums to date, “Blight And Blossom” in 2012, followed by “House Of Jacks” in 2014 and the recent set “Gilded”. Following his debut, the quality of the recordings prompting BBC Radio 2 to give him the Horizon Award at the Folk awards in 2013. Also, in 2005 Blair played the young Willy Wonka in the highly successful film starring Johnny Depp. A singer and guitarist he gives a mainstream, alternative Folk sound.
Blair in a short time as a solo artist has established himself as a rare talent in Folk circles and has toured around the globe to rave reviews. A talented songwriter and the music strays seamlessly from pure Acoustic Folk to a more Rock and Pop style or a Country Blues feel.
This talented 24 year old is taking Folk into a different direction, there are traditional style tunes but there is always an Alternative element in there somewhere. Really nice written songs, a powerful yet laid back and effortless vocal with some beautiful guitar playing add to this guy’s repertoire.
My favourite tracks are the mid tempo Country style “Less The Pawn” from the debut album and the title track from the second album, “House Of Jacks” which could have been a Crowded House record, gorgeous song. I look forward to hearing more from Blair Dunlop. The new album “Gilded” is a real treat featuring tracks that are similar to the band Turin Brakes (one of my favourite Brit bands) like “The Egoist” and “Eternal Optimist”. Great talent!
