4 2 WATCH – Sneak peek at 4 up and coming artists! – Little Folk/Starlight City/Wren/The Argues
LITTLE FOLK –
Little Folk are a four piece Americana band from South Wales comprising of Dewi Bowen (guitar/vocals), Lucy Hannah (vocals), Marc Bowen (banjo) and Niall Rees (bass). They had a blistering year last year gaining local critical acclaim and a blossoming fan base.
The band had airplay on various UK radio stations and also in Nashville. Although they are an Americana band there are strong of elements of Folk and Country intertwined with sweet melodies and harmonies. They were invited to play at RHS Flower Show and Extreme Sailing Series. Their reputation growing from inside Wales they have also played in London at The Water Rats venue.
They released their debut 4 track E.P. last year entitled, “Litte Folk Volume 1” with a new one scheduled for release early this year. The tracks are bright and breezy and Country tinted to give that “may be sad but feeling positive” vibe that many Country crossover songs have these days.
“Music City” off the E.P. is the most Pop style track with great lyrics, laid back vocals and accomplished musicianship throughout. My favourite track has to be “Eleanor”, it is has an unusual bare bones feel and stop-start backing music before the very catchy chorus. Keep your eyes open for Little Folk as I think they may soon be BIG folk!

STARLIGHT CITY –
Starlight City are Alex Birt (vocals)/Johnny Webb (guitar/vocals)/Seb Nice (guitar/vocals)/Nathan Lawson (bass/vocals)/Josh Herbert (drums). The Pop Punk band hail from Swindon in the UK.
Created from the ashes of local band Formula 51 the guys started Starlight City in 2010 with aspirations of writing some songs, playing some gigs, to become famous and meet girls. They are ticking off the objectives one by one!
Their Facebook page says the band are still unsigned and if that’s the case then I am sure it won’t be long before they are signed up. From the tracks I have heard they remind me of a hybrid between Blink 182 and Green Day with a little Busted thrown in for good measure.
My favourite track is “Hurricane”, it reminds me of The Clash in their prime. Powerful and strong with big Punk guitar riffs and bombing drums. “Chasing Drums” also reminds me of The Buzzcocks and those late 70s/early80s Punk pioneers. I will watch Starlight City with keen eyes as they progress.

STARLIGHT CITY ON REVERBNATION
Wren is a young singer-songwriter based in Kent, London, and has released her 5 track debut E.P. in 2015 called “Let Go”. Not content with one string to her bow she is also a dance, drama and singing teacher and a vocal coach tutoring singers on vocal technigues, vocal strength and performance among other things.
On listening to her E.P., Wren has a very unusual voice, think of Tori Amos with a powerful yet cutesy vocal range of Ariana Grande with a little rasp in her voice like Stevie Nicks. Hard to imagine? then you need to hear this lady. The debut tracks are quite something.
I do hope this lady is working on an album since this release as I would like to hear more, I think there is a lot more to come from this unique artist. “Maid Of Clay” is mystical and almost trance-like with soft vocals while “Let Go” is a brilliant track that could have come from Ms. Nicks’ solo albums.
“1.43” sounds like a homage to Tori Amos and is a very powerful yet minimal musical track. The whole E.P. is quite astounding for an 18 year old. Let us hope there is going to be an album!

WREN ON iTUNES
THE ARGUES –
The Argues are an Indie Rock band from Ontario, Canada and there is something a little unusual about them! The two frontwomen are sisters Sabrina and Lauren Argue, nothing unusual there. The drummer and guitarist are the girls’ parents Chantale and Michael! The all singing, multi-instrumental band are quite an extraordinary family band.
As a “family” band there have been obvious comparisons with certain TV family groups but this band are original, and play some great catchy songs. The debut E.P. “Something New” gives you exactly what it says on the tin! There are elements of Fleetwood Mac, The Bangles and Tom Petty. The band are a very tight musical outfit.
Being a Bangles fan, I especially like the ballad “The Buoy” and “Running Til’ You Drop” is pure Pop Rock at its best. So we have the youngest in the band, Sabrina who’s talents include harmonica, guitar, bass, keyboards and percussion. Next we have Lauren who plays bass and guitar and Chantale (mum) on the drums and who, incidentally books the gigs for the band. Dad Michael on guitar is also the number one roadie, he carries the equipment and drives the bus!
Considering the name, they apparently don’t “argue” much and are a very close family. For parents to backup their daughters in a band has maybe been done a couple of times, but with all contributing to the songwriting and creating, performing and all chipping in to the tasks of keeping a band going, its brilliant. I hope to hear more..
